Siratro. Macroptilium atropurpureum

Native to Central and North America

Can form dense ground covers on the dunes displacing indigenous plants. Only a problem on the north coast of NSW.

Form: Twining herb, stems can be 2 - 3m long.

Flower: Dark purple. Summer to autumn

Fruit/Seed: Long slender pods.

Control: Hand removal is difficult because of its large root system. Seed pod collection and disposal is important to ensure eradication.

A number of chemical controls are available. Scrape/cut and paint with herbicide is effective.
