Mother of millions. Bryophyllum delagoense Native to Africa and Madagascar A problem on the central and north coast. Likes full sun and infertile soils. Invades hind-dunes, open bushland and headlands. ‘Live plant (Bryophyllum pinnata)’ is closely related and found in very similar habitats. It is distinguished by broad flat leaves and is also considered a weed along sections of the central and north coast. Form: Succulent erect herb, up to 1m high. Flower: Salmon/scarlet to orange. Late winter to spring. Fruit/Seed: 4 clustered follicles (dry fruit). Produces many seeds. Control: Easily hand-pulled, be careful to remove the entire plant as other plant sections can easily re-establish. Pulled plants should be bagged and disposed of. Also, hot fire can be a successful treatment and is recommended in some areas. A number of chemical controls are available. |
