Description: A densely tufted perennial to 80 cm. Leaf a brown tubular sheath at the bottom of stiff cylindrical green stem. Fruit a brownish globular cluster, 1-2 cm in diam. that appears near the top of the stem. Usually grows in damp to wet coastal habitats (including foredunes).

Propagation: Propagate with freshly collected
seed from ripe fruit. Collect seed heads and plant immediately in clean seedling mix of 2/3 washed river sand and 1/3 peat moss or organic matter. Keep very moist. Seed heads can be directly planted and established plants can be
divided.

Regeneration
use: Pioneer species in severely degraded ecosystems. Essential part
of climax community.
