Family: ASTELIACEAE Distribution: Queensland to Nambucca

 

Description: Shrub to 5 m. Leaves green, elliptic, 30-80 cm long, 4-12 cm wide, petiole 15-45 cm long. Flowers mauve. Fruit red 0.7-10 mm berry. Usually grows in littoral rainforest and coastal wet sclerophyll forest.

 

Propagation: Propagate with freshly collected seed from ripe fruit. Remove seeds from fruit and plant immediately in clean seedling mix of 2/3 washed river sand and 1/3 peat moss or organic matter. Seed germinates readily within 4 weeks (some will continue to germinate over a longer period). Seed will store if kept cool and dry and protected from insect and vermin attack. Plants can be grown from tip and stem cuttings.

 

Regeneration use: Climax species, usually used in assisted rehabilitation projects, i.e. ecosystem has remnant value and is not fully degraded. Can be used as pioneer species.
